If Only

What might have been, I sometimes think
If I hadn’t tripped, spilled my drink,
Would I still be here with you
Would you be with someone new?

If I simply could have made the light,
If the traffic made you miss your flight
Uncountable worlds that might exist
How many might be just like this?

Chaos springs
From a butterfly’s wings
Nothing we can predict
It’s all up to chance
No one knows in advance
The future we have picked

If only I’d have held my tongue,
Made better decisions when I was young
Slightly different use of words
Would have been its own reward

If only I had studied more
I’d have no complaints anymore
If only I’d have left my wife
I’d have a very different life

We are not merely toys to our fate
Smallest things can become something great
If only things were slightly changed
If only we could rewind
If only we could make a tweak
And leave this all behind

If we’d have only skipped the fight
If only we’d made love that night
If only we’d known what we know now
If we knew the what, if we knew the how

If only we could change the world…
