Most aircraft have a device called a transponder which replies to air-traffic-control’s radar with a 4-digit code that identifies the aircraft.
The code “7700” indicates an emergency situation. When a pilot sets this code on their transponder, alarms go off at nearby air-traffic-control facilities.
